Description - Il-2 Sturmovik: 1946

If you ever played Il-2 Sturmovik: 1946 in its day, you would have said it sucked, so why does it still have a loyal following of fans? If you try to play it with a joypad or a keyboard and mouse, then it is about as fun as chewing tin foil. However, if you have a joystick, which were still mildly popular in 2006, then the game takes on a whole new dimension. It is a flight simulator after all, and it should not be played without a joystick because anything else ruins the experience.Very realistic flight mechanicsThe modern version of Il-2 Sturmovik: 1946 comes with all four add-on packs, which make the game worth the money for anybody who has a joystick and who enjoys flight simulators. With the four packs included, you get to fly an astounding 229 aircraft, and there are almost 200 campaign missions to play. Even if you pay treble what the asking price is, you are still getting value for money with this game. The game is a brilliant flight simulator if you use a joystickWhat is most interesting about Il-2 Sturmovik: 1946 is that it is not an arcade or action game. If you start a mission, you can expect to fly in real time for as long as 45 minutes. What’s more, the enemies act in very realistic ways. For example, you may take down their heavy ships, but miss their communications ship, and before you know it, you are being followed by fighters while the remaining ships fire up at you.

Pros:
"A surprisingly realistic flight and fight simulator"
"There are hundreds of different aircraft and missions to take on"

Cons:
"Playing with a mouse keyboard or joypad will ruin the experience"
"Some people cannot stomach waiting 45 minutes to start a mission"
