The Wendigo

There are some brilliant horror games coming out these days, many of them from smaller studios. Because indie developers don’t have to meet certain expectations of huge game sizes and 10 DLC options and a certain retail price, they have the freedom to work on smaller and much more intimate games. Wendigo is a great example of a low scale horror which replaces all the flash with atmosphere, skill and terror.First person survivalWendigo is a first-person game, so you see through the character’s eyes as you explore a creepy Victorian mansion. Your character is a paranormal investigator, seeking to debunk ghostly urban legends. Local rumour has it that this mansion is cursed by a native spirit, the Wendigo. Located in the heart of a forest, the mansion is expansive, dark and very atmospheric. This is mostly achieved through subtle sounds and very rich lighting effects. This gory game is a psychological trap and relies on fear, disorienting you as you explore. You are expected to use tools and escape rather than engage in out-and-out combat. Though the graphics are not cutting edge, they are a cut above many indie games.Simply scaryWendigo is quite a scary game, thanks to a good understanding of tension and atmosphere, though it does come off the back of similar games. This game won’t satisfy combat fans or those looking for instant gore, but horror fans will appreciate the techniques used.
