Cholesterol is an essential part of every cell membrane. It also serves as a precursor to many hormones. Cholesterol is produced by the liver and it also enters the body from dietary sources, such as milk, eggs and meat. When there is too much cholesterol in your blood, it can build up in the walls of the arteries. Over time, this buildup may cause the arteries to harden - a process referred to as arteriosclerosis. When the arteries are narrowed, blood flow to the heart muscle is slowed down. The blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the heart. If enough blood and oxygen cannot reach the heart, you may suffer Chest Pain. Heart attack occurs if the blood supply to a portion of the heart is completely blocked.There are two major forms of cholesterol: Low-Density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). These are the form in which cholesterol travels in the blood. LDL have Little protein and high levels of cholesterol and HDL has a lot of protein and very little cholesterol.
